I'm doing a spreadsheet with multiple lines of text in a cell, I want to enter new text on a new line within that cell. I know you can use Alt +Enter in Excel for PC is there an equivalent for Mac? This thread is locked. When you finish entering the message for your text box, click anywhere outside the box to deselect it. After adding a text box to a chart or worksheet while it’s still selected, you can edit it as follows: Move the text box to a new location in the chart by dragging it. Resize the text box by dragging the appropriate sizing handle. On the Layout tab, in the Insert group, click Text Box. In the chart, click where you want to start a corner of the text box, and then drag until the text box is the size that you want. In the text box, type the text that you want. The text will wrap in the text box. To start a new line in the text box, press ENTER. Excel automatically inserts a legend with default formatting at your selected location in the chart. You can then format the legend's font and change its location via the Legend Options panel.
I want to write multi-lines in one MS Excel cell.
But whenever I press the
fretjeEnter
key, the cell editing ends and the cursor moves to next cell. How can I avoid this?10.4k55 gold badges3434 silver badges6262 bronze badges

What you want to do is to wrap the text in the current cell. You can do this manually by pressing Alt + Enter every time you want a new line
Or, you can set this as the default behaviour by pressing the Wrap Text in the Home tab on the Ribbon. Now, whenever you hit enter, it will automatically wrap the text onto a new line rather than a new cell.

You have to use Alt+Enter to enter a carriage return inside a cell.

- Edit a cell and type what you want on the first 'row'
- Press one of the following, depending on your OS:
Windows:Alt + EnterMac:Ctrl + Option + Enter - Type what you want on the next 'row' in the same cell
- Repeat as needed.
Note that inserting carriage returns with the key combinations above produces different behavior than turning on
Wrap Text
. In the screenshot below, column A
has the carriage returns and column B
has Wrap Text
turned on. Changing the width of a column with carriage returns doesn't remove them. Changing the width of a column with Wrap Text
turned on will change where the lines break. How To Add Text For Next Line With In Excel Macros

Alt + Enter never worked for me. I had to go to
jonscaFormat Cells
and make sure that the Number
tab was set to Text
. That allowed me to see exactly as I had input. My issue could have been Mac specific though.3,7241414 gold badges3030 silver badges4545 bronze badges
