I am using Version 14.4.3 Word for Mac 2011. Even after I selected the 'Wrap text within text boxes for overlay objects', I still can't wrap the text around the picture within the text box. I can't even change the wrapping style from the default 'in line with text' to anything else. (If you use PowerPoint 2016 for Mac, you need to close the Word file before you can see the wrapped text in PowerPoint.) In PowerPoint, the image and wrapped text are in a box that you can drag and resize. I am trying to figure out why Microsoft Word 2011 for the Mac won't let me wrap the text I wrote for an English project around a picture. I looked up tutorials online and they didn't help. Right-click on the shape border and select 'Format Shape.' Click on 'Text Options' in the Format Shape pane that appears on the right and click on the text icon marked with a green A. Check the 'Wrap Text in Shape' box to apply text wrapping at the borders of the shape. Click the Format tab, and then under Arrange, click Wrap Text. Click the wrapping option that you want to apply. Tip: To change a picture or drawing object's position on the page relative to the text, select the picture or object, click the Format tab.
All the text wrapping options you see in Word are for regular text (i.e., not in a text box) to wrap around the text box itself or an object, and not vice versa. This includes pictures inserted as inline. In order to make a text box's text wrap around an object:
- Right-click on the text box and select Format shape (or select the text box and choose Format in the main menu bar)
- Select Layout > Advanced
- Click on the Position tab at the top
- Enable 'Wrap text within text boxes for overlay objects' all the way at the bottom
Proof of concept:
If you need to overlap two text boxes, you'll have to add a shape and make one of the text boxes wrap around it. The shape has to be 'in front' for the text to wrap. Finally, make the shape colorless:

I now have 14.3.6 (you should update through Help > Check for Updates). You are right, the instructions I gave in the second bullet were somewhat abbreviated. I've now edited them. Here's the checkbox in question:

How To Wrap Text In Word Mac 2008
Thanks for your feedback.
I wish I could do this but my version of Word for Mac 14.3.9 does not offer the 'wrap text within text boxes for overlay objects' option - everything else yes, but not that. It's intensely frustrating to be able to do this on the PC but not on the Mac

When a text box is first inserted, it may have its default wrapping style set to 'inline.' Such being the case, the option you need is not available:
However, changing the wrapping style to other than 'In line with text' causes the missing option to reappear:
To control the default parameters of a text box, just define them like you want, then right click on the text box and select 'Set as default Text Box.'
The option should be grayed out, not disappear altogether!

No, you can't. Images inserted into a Text Box can be In Line with Text only.
The previous conversations have pertained to having text in a Text Box wrap around images/objects external to the Text Box.

I see. Daniel, I misunderstood your instruction. I got it to work, but sometimes the 'Wrap text within text boxes for overlay objects' just doesn't show up even if I have changed the 'in line with text' to 'square' or 'tight'.
